3.24. Check of a condition of the battery, care of it and charging

Address also materials of the Head Sistema of electric equipment of the engine.

The rechargeable battery is in a water-collecting compartment, between a motive compartment and a windshield.

The provided service life of the rechargeable battery is reached only if it is always rather charged.

When using of the car mainly at short distances or at the long parking, we recommend to a thicket to carry out an inspection of degree of state of charge of the rechargeable battery.

Tools and materials necessary at service of the rechargeable battery

1 - A front board / goggles - during removal of traces of corrosion by a rigid brush the crystallized acid particles easily can get into eyes.
2 - Baking soda - water solution of baking soda is used for neutralization of traces of corrosion.
3 - Acid-free vaseline - greasing of plugs of the battery will help to avoid corrosion development in the future.
4 - The device for cleaning of plugs of batteries / tips of wires - a special form brush nozzles from a rigid wire will help to smooth out effectively plugs of the battery and terminal clips.

5 - The impregnated felt washers - installation of such washer directly under a terminal clip will allow to avoid corrosion development.
6 - A stripper - sometimes clips of wires are put on plugs very densely and do not give in to removal even of a full otpuskaniye of fixture.
7 - The device for cleaning of plugs of batteries / tips of wires - despite constructive difference from mentioned in point 4, is intended for performance of the same tasks.
8 - Rubber gloves - it is not necessary to underestimate the importance of this protectant - do not forget that the battery contains sulfuric acid!

Check and leaving

During the work with the battery it is necessary to undertake certain security measures. At banks of the battery there is always extremely a flammable hydrogen therefore do not allow approach to the battery with the lit cigarette or other types of naked flame at all. Electrolyte of the battery represents solution of sulfuric acid which at hit in eyes or on open parts of the body causes serious injuries. Besides, acid corrodes clothes and paints. At shutdown of the battery always the first disconnect a weight cable, and connect it in the last turn!

Corrosion of plugs of the battery is usually shown in the form of light, friable powder

The wire detachment from the battery plug by means of a key - sometimes when corrosion destroyed a nut, for this procedure is required special flat-nose pliers (always the first disconnect and the last connect a weight wire!)

Irrespective of type of device for cleaning the pure, brilliant surface of the plug has to be result always

When cleaning tips of wires it is necessary to remove all traces of corrosion (an internal part of a tip has the conicity repeating the battery plug form therefore do not remove too much material)

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Care of the battery is very important procedure allowing to avoid stops in way because of its discharge. Implementation of the procedure of service requires the corresponding tool.
  2. Before the procedure of service always at first switch off the engine and switch-off all electric devices, then disconnect a weight cable from the battery.

If the radio receiver of your car is equipped with system of protection against theft, make sure that you gathered the correct code before a battery detachment.

  1. Usually cars are equipped with the batteries which are not demanding special leaving. It is possible to uncover cans and to add the distilled water. Latest models can be equipped with the batteries which are not demanding leaving at all which are completely sealed.
  1. Shift a cover over the rechargeable battery (arrow 1) to the right and remove it (arrow 2) up.

The rechargeable battery with the indicator (production version)

Check electrolyte level, if necessary, add the distilled water.

It is possible to determine the level of electrolyte and degree of state of charge of the rechargeable battery by the indicator (shooter). Light the indicator with a pocket small lamp. At the same time emergence of three various flowers is possible:

Owing to existence of air bubbles under the indicator color can be incorrect. Therefore when checking knock slightly with any subject of the battery case.

If the battery has age more than 5 years and the indicator has no color, the battery needs to be replaced with new.

In the rechargeable battery you shine only with a pocket small lamp. For this purpose do not apply naked flame (a lighter, a match) at all. Danger of explosion! You watch that near the open case of the rechargeable battery there was no burning cigarette.

Filling of the rechargeable battery with the distilled water

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Switch off ignition.
  2. Remove a film over a stopper.

  1. Turn off a battery stopper. HUNDRED apply a special bottle of VAS 5045 which design of a jellied branch pipe interferes with overflow of sections of the battery and pouring of electrolyte to filling of the battery. At achievement of the maximum level intake of the distilled water in battery section automatically stops.
  1. If the specified special bottle is unavailable, fill in water to an internal mark (a plastic crossing point) (1) or to an external tag of MAX.
  1. Screw a battery stopper.

Do not pour too much at all the distilled water since otherwise from the battery electrolyte which damages adjacent parts will begin to pour out.

The rechargeable battery without indicator

Check electrolyte level, if necessary, add the distilled water.

Check visually electrolyte level on the transparent case of the battery. Turn out a battery stopper only in that case when electrolyte level in any section fell below the mark MIN.

If it is impossible to determine electrolyte level, turn out a stopper and look in section. You do not shine in the battery with naked flame. Danger of explosion! Apply for this purpose a pocket small lamp.

Filling of the battery with the distilled water

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Switch off ignition.
  1. Fill each section of the battery with separately distilled water. To the mark MAX or to an internal tag (a plastic crossing point) (1).
  1. Screw a stopper and tighten it.

Do not fill in too much the distilled water at all. At too high level of electrolyte it needs to be sucked away.

Check of reliability of plugs of the rechargeable battery

If the battery is fixed poorly or plugs are not tightened, then the investigation of it there can be premature failure of the battery owing to its jolting, an obgoraniye of a cable or violation in operation of electric equipment. As at not attached battery the memories given electronic blocks are erased, for example, the radio receiver study instructions on removal and installation of the battery in the Section Replacement of the Rechargeable Battery.

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Move in different directions plugs (1) and (2) of the rechargeable battery and check reliability of their fastening. If necessary, tighten fastening nuts. Inhaling moment: 6 Of Nanometer.
  1. If the battery is fixed poorly, fix a collar (3) by a bolt of fastening (4) the moment of 12 Nanometers.
  2. At detection of traces of the corrosion (which is usually representing a friable raid of white color) disconnect wires from plugs, smooth out them a special brush and again connect. Emergence of corrosion can be minimized by installation of specially processed washers which are available on sale in shops of auto parts, or by drawing on plugs and collars of wires of a layer of acid-free vaseline or suitable lubricant after their connection.
  3. Make sure that the pallet of the battery is in satisfactory condition, and the bolt of a fixing collar is reliably tightened. If the battery was removed from the pallet, track that in installation time on it details or other foreign objects did not lie. At a latching of a fixing collar do not tighten its bolt too hardly.
  4. Corrosion traces from the pallet, the case of the battery and surrounding surfaces can be removed by means of water solution of baking soda. Apply mix with a small brush, let's it stand and then wash away plentiful amount of clear water.
  5. The metal surfaces of the car which underwent corrosion should be covered with primer on a zinc basis and then to paint.
  6. Additional information on the battery and on start of the engine from an external source can be found in the Head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine and in Introduction.

Charging

Producers recommend to remove the battery from the car for its charging since the gas which is emitted during this procedure can damage the painted surfaces or an interior of the car, depending on a battery arrangement. Bystry charging with the connected wires of the battery can lead to damages of electric system of the car.

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Remove all covers from battery cans (if they are available) and close openings pure rags to prevent an electrolyte spillage. Disconnect a cable of mass of the battery and connect charger wires to its plugs (positive to positive, negative to negative), then turn on the charger in network. If it has the switch, make sure that it is installed in situation<12 вольт>.

If the radio receiver of your car is equipped with system of protection against theft, make sure that you gathered the correct code before a battery detachment.

  1. If you use the charger with current more than two amperes, regularly check the battery during charging to make sure that it did not overheat. Using the slow charger, you can quietly leave the battery to be loaded on all night long after regular check within the first two hours. When charging batteries, not demanding leaving, certain precautionary measures can be required (for example, use very much of the low-ampere charger). On such battery can be precautionary шильдик, but if it is not present address for consultation in representative office of the manufacturer or the electrician of auto repair shop.
  2. If banks of the battery have removable covers, each hour within the last several hours of a charging cycle check electrolyte density by means of the areometer. Inexpensive areometers are available on sale in shops of auto parts - at their application follow the enclosed instructions. The battery can be considered loaded if within two hours indicators of density of its electrolyte do not change, and electrolyte in banks freely bubbles. Electrolyte density in separate banks has to be almost identical. If this not so, so one or several cans of the battery failed and they should be replaced.
  3. Fuller information on the battery and on start of the engine from an auxiliary source can be found in the Head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine and in Introduction.
